Well, yet another mix cd to review... of the house variety… House music - there are so many different types these days - Its hard to know what is what anymore - Funky, dirty, electro, soulful etc... As far as I am concerned house MUST be soulful or it isn't house - so if you happen to share this view of mine then this double mixed cd is definitely for you!!!!
We have the new release from Seamless Recordings "bargrooves: Influences" 2 cds of music, CD1 mixed by Ben Sowton (the man behind Bargrooves) and CD2 mixed by Jay 'Underdog' Hannan For those of you not familiar with Jay Hannan - he was Ben Watts dj partner at the long running (not anymore though) Sunday night soulful house do that was LAZY DOG... and since then is now the main man at UNDERDOG - and can often be found playing 7hr sets at N0tting
Hill Arts Club.....
In other words Jay's soulful house credentials are not in question!!!!
For this mix Jay has pulled out some real gems old and new funky and jazzy with that all important touch of Afro/Latino vibe for good measure too... I would also point out that there are a lot of vocal tracks(7) on this mix which, for me, is a really good and refreshing thing - especially these days! - Obviously the mixing is as tight as you would expect - apparently all done in one live take too! Highlights for me being the massive 'Spirit of Drums' by Lonesome Echo and the final track - 'Moustache' by BlackJoy If you add the other cd (mixed by Ben Sowton) - which is also a very pleasurable listening experience then you have a very nice mix cd package - also the release comes with a 3rd bonus cd - containing an interview with Jay Hannan - some animation and 4 exclusive tracks from the Seamless Vaults....
So - I say again - if you're a lover of REAL house music - YOU NEED THIS!!!
